Do you want to win one of my books?  Or suffer a misfortune and win two of them? (Winner of the Old Joke of the Year Award, 1976) And are you bored with surfing the web for pornography or the cheapest digital camera? And do you have thirty minutes or so to spare? If you can answer yes to all three questions, you're in luck. Here is my annual New Year Competition. Well, it's the first one and it's possible that there'll be another one next year, although who knows where we'll all be. All you have to do is e-mail me (at martin@martinforeman.com) the answers to the following questions. The first two correct e-mails to be received will get a copy of my first novel, Weekend, and my latest collection of short stories, First and Fiftieth. And if no-one sends in the correct answers, then the most correct wins. (Of course it's always possible that no-one will enter the competition, in which case we'll all be happy. You'll have saved time and I'll have saved the cost of two books and postage.)  So here goes.

Section One: The Egoist (all the answers can be found on this website or www.firstandfiftieth.com).

When this column was originally published, I promised to give the answers a few months later. I never did - but then no-one entered the competition, so we're quits...
