“A new path taken, tragedy appears. Plot borrowed from another play in steals, o’ertakes our heroes and with sad death marks the consequence of greed.”
Martin Foreman’s reimagining of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice received five- and four-star reviews at the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe.
Combining Shakespeare’s original text with language and imagery in his style, Foreman stripped the comedy from this classic drama to present a tragedy that focuses on Antonio, his young protegé Bassanio and the anti-semitism that underlies the story.
Discussions are underway for a revived production in 2026. Details – cast, crew etc – of the 2025 production are on Arbery Theatre.
