Why did Martin Caplan die? A year after the young man’s death a stray remark after a dinner-party throws family and business colleagues into turmoil as secret after secret is forced into the open.

J B Priestley’s first play (1932) is a masterpiece that combines psychological insights, drama and – a favourite ploy of Priestley’s – manipulation of time. Martin Foreman’s direction, with Dug Campbell’s sound and Gordon Hughes’ lighting, portrayed with devastating effect the slow disintegration of relationships and personalities, brought into sharp focus by the play’s sharp and unexpected ending.
