Director
My goal as a director is to create an intense experience for the audience from the moment the curtain rises or blackout fades until the final fall of curtain or extinguishing of light.
The Play’s The Thing
I am attracted to comedies and dramas that have stood or will stand the test of time. The plays I direct should at the very least entertain and ideally also provoke conversation and thought.
My approach tends to be realistic although it allows for flights of fantasy and surrealism.
If the work is classical (ancient Greek, Shakespeare etc) I consider a timeless setting more effective than forcing smartphones and drones onto a world that never imagined them.
A strong set is helpful but good lighting and sound are essential.
My talents are not suited to musicals, dance, young people’s or interactive theatre. I am unlikely to take on experimental or hyper-contemporary works.
Hold The Mirror Up To Nature
The character the audience sees should be both believable and, to the extent that the script allows it, fully-rounded. The challenge for the actor is understanding and creating the whole character’s personality, their background, their desires and fears.

EGTG (2022)
I am happiest when working with actors who can convey a range of emotions, casting off their own personalities on stage and working in a team that brings out the best performances in each of its members.
Rehearsals
Scenes can be blocked and motives hashed out early in the process but rehearsals only effectively begin when everyone is off book and interacting with each other and the world around them.
